2005 Maserati Coupe Cambiocorsa - Tech Maserati
Smart Thumping"My goal was good, clean bass at a reasonable volume," Tech says about his subwoofer setup. To accomplish this, he installed a Rockford Fosgate Punch P212D4 12" sub in a custom MDF and fiberglass enclosure built into the car's spare tire opening. The driver itself was trimmed with mirrored black glass and black vinyl to match the rest of the system.
Tech wouldn't have it any other way. "Most people with this type of car never drive it," he says, "[but] I am the complete opposite. I've driven this car over 20,000 miles already ... it's a daily driver." But that's not to say the Maserati is just another commuter. "The best part about this car is the attention that it brings," Tech says. "At car shows it is expected but this car brings looks everywhere. People constantly break out their camera phones when I'm going down the highway. Pumping gas turns into a conversation with the car next to me-not to mention the looks I get from valets."
The Tunemaster
Tech chose the Alpine IVA-W200 6.5-inch DVD player/monitor to anchor the Maserati's A/V system. To complete the install, he removed the car's passenger's-side airbag and fabricated a trim plate covered with black vinyl to match the rest of the dash. The factory unit was left in place for navigation use.
Amping Up
Three Rockford Fosgate amps-a pair of multichannel P450.4s for the front and rear speakers and a monoblock P325.1 for the subwoofer-power the system from a custom MDF amprack in the Maserati's trunk. Producing a total of 590 watts RMS at 4 ohms, each amp is fan cooled and the whole rack is fitted with fiberglass panels and etched glass windows with the Rockford Fosgate and Maserati logos.
Clean Looks
Instead of gutting the car and lining everything with Dynamat, Tech left things relatively the same. "The Maserati is a solidly built car and I found out that it was already well dampened," he says. "These types of cars even use carpet-backed wheelhouse liners to reduce road noise." Tech also left most of the car's saddleback leather interior intact, simply highlighting his installs with black vinyl and mirrored black acrylic.
Custom Accents
In addition to a Grand Sport front end upgrade, Tech modified the Maserati's exterior with rolled fenders, wheel trim, neon accents and a custom spoiler. The car rolls on forged Giovanna GFG custom wheels and features a custom chrome cold air intake and a nitrous-injected engine-"Yes, on a Maserati," Tech says.
A High Note
The front soundstage consists of Image Dynamics CD1PRO horns mounted behind molded grilles under the dash and Rockford Fosgate's T162S 6.5" component set in the factory door locations. Tech then installed the tweeters up in the pillars and accented them with burl wood trim. A Tang Band 5" woofer handles the center channel from a custom fiberglass enclosure in the center air duct while a pair of Rockford Fosgate P1694C 6x9s round things out from the back seat.
The Tweaker
An Alpine PXA-H701 audio processor handles the system's EQ, crossovers and time delay settings. Mounted between the rear seats, the brain unit was covered with mirrored glass and highlighted with blue neon and the faceplate controller was wrapped in simple black vinyl in a custom center console mount.
Driver
Tech at 29 has been competing in sound quality competitions since he built his first sound car-'96 Neon-12 years ago. "My friends would always just 'throw' a box in the back whereas I tried to hide the wires and make it presentable," he says. Based out of Piedmont, SC, he now spends his days working as the manufacturing development manager for BMW exterior components at Plastic Omnium Auto Exterior. He competes in the Pro Street, Import Street and Exotic/VIP Street categories for IASCA, USACi, MECA and other organizations around the country.
