AEI President Dave Johnson's 2007 Porsche Cayman S - Speed Plus Sound

Much like surgeons, Johnson's team treats every car they touch with the utmost care, a philosophy taught to every student in the school. It was particularly important that they kept the interior's integrity if the car were to be resold in the future. The operation on the Cayman started on the dash with the careful removal of the stock radio and the placement of Pioneer's versatile audio video system, the AVH-P6800DVD.
One might think a swap between the OE radio and aftermarket player would be simple and easy but, in fact, it was quite the opposite since removing the stock unit left a larger opening so that the new source unit couldn't conceal itself. It's in these situations that years of expertise in fabrication come in handy. Using MDF, fiberglass, and body filler, the team of installers crafted a trim ring that perfectly blended the Pioneer deck with the bottom climate controls, giving it that showroom appearance.
In order for the system to produce that full spectrum of sound Johnson wished for, subwoofers were required. However, installing large woofers in a car built for speed was next to impossible-but part of being a great fabricator is never accepting that. Johnson and his instructors worked with the Cayman's space limitations and utilized an area directly behind the seats. There they were able to fit two JL Audio W7's 8-inch subwoofers by building two highly customized fiberglass enclosures shaped like turbines.
Each of the 1-cubic-foot enclosures was molded to fit along the lines of the rear window. After its fabrication, the turbine-shaped subwoofer boxes we're coated with the same high-quality Arctic silver paint, matching them exactly to the Cayman's exterior color. From rap to rock, the subwoofers produce the tight low bass Johnson craves during his 20-mile commute. "We're really happy with the results," Johnson says.
