Consumer Electronic Show - A Sneak Peek

by CAE, Feb 01, 2001

The Marksman M5 system employs a 3-channel design offering all of the features of the M4 plus a dual stage sensor input and internal circuitry to support dual zone pre-warn chirp operation. One of the most unusual features that comes standard with the M5 system are its two 4-button transmitters. One is equipped with Magnadyne's exclusive passive remote transmitter operation feature. This feature allows your system to automatically arm & lock doors and disarm & unlock doors whenever you leave or approach your vehicle respectively. According to a Magnadyne spokesman, this means you'll never have to manually depress the transmitter button again when entering or leaving your vehicle. For those of you who wish to always maintain control, a slide switch is included on the passive remote transmitter to allow on-off control of this feature if desired. The passive remote transmitter is also optional with the M4 system.

Last on the list of sneak peek respondents is Stovact, Inc. Stovact, a newcomer to the scene produces vehicle security, telematics, and location based products. Adding to their Metro line of integrated vehicle security/paging command and control products, Stovact plans to introduce their new Universal Interface Modules, Models IM-410, IM-420, and IM-430. These modules are designed to allow the connection of their unique GPS+ Plus "On-Demand Locate" system to virtually any brand of alarm or security system on the market. Each of the Stovact Universal Interface Modules provide an automated "alert" feature and GPS location data, reporting the actual location of any vehicle so equipped. The addition of an IM-410 module to a security system for example would provide the user with an "alert" sent to their home, office, or cell phone, automatically informing them if someone is attempting to start their vehicle. The GPS location information for the vehicle is also simultaneously relayed to the Stovact Monitoring Center, for possible future use in recovering a possibly stolen vehicle.

The Stovact IM-420 and IM-430 modules go one step further by adding paging command and control to both the GPS+ Plus or GPS+ Plus and the vehicle as well, respectively. The IM-430 provides two user configurable paging command and control outputs which may be connected to remote engine starters, door unlock circuits, etc. Both the IM-420 and IM-430 include an "On-Demand Locate" feature, where the Stovact user can simply log into the Stovact Web site at www.stovact.com, enter their subscriber number and PIN, and "on-demand" have a map indicating their vehicle's current location delivered directly to their computer screen. No special computers or hardware are needed. The subscription cost for the "alert" and "On-Demand Locate" services start at $6.25/month with unlimited paging commands and four alerts/locations. Additional alerts/locations may be purchased for a nominal additional cost.

I'm certain there will be many more wondrous products and technologies to see at the 2001 CES, much more than the few I have introduced here. But that will have to wait for my CES recap article. I hope this will hold you until then.
