MECA Competitors Vie for Top Honors in SQL, SPL and Show & Shine Contests

On July 11th, 2010, Mobile Electronics Competiton Association (MECA) members gathered in Lebanon, Tennessee to compete in “The Vinny” an annual event hosted by MECA Charter Member, Vinny Taylor, one of MECA’s top SQL judges. The James E. Ward Ag Center & Fairgrounds filled with enthusiasts from 10 states to compete in SQL, SPL and Show & Shine contests with $1000 in prize money to go around.

Steve Cook of Team Audio X/Zapco snagged the prize for the highest SQ score. The Florence, Alabama, enthusiast scored 84.9 points out of 100 averaged from three judges! Matt Roberts of Team Elite/Zapco won the Install Best of Show with 94.5 points out of 100. The winner of the RTA Freq Out was Harlan Owens of Team-Loco/XS Power/Zapco, hauling in 34 of 40 possible points with the use of the AudioControl SA-3055 meter.

On the SPL side of the event, Beau Boren of Team Incriminator/OH Generator from Macon, Georgia, reached 164.9 dB in Radical X2 on the TermLab meter, taking home top prize. Gary Fletcher of Team dB Revolution/Sundown/XS Power from Hermitage, Tennessee, had the highest combined SPL scores for Sound Pressure League Best of Show with 158.6 dB in X1 and 125.5 dB in Drive-by SPL Parade 5. The Drive-by SPL Parade Best of Show went to Chris Neely of Memphis/Sundown, with a tricked-out hearse that measured 125.8 dB six feet away from the passenger side of the vehicle.

The 5-foot-tall Best of Show trophy went to Robert Hilton of Canton, Georgia. Robert had the highest points total in all the audio contests and also won the Sound Quality League contest for the “Zapco SQL Best of Show” trophy.

Other winners of the day were the Project Mayhem Car Club (Show & Shine Club Participation Award), Brian and Selena Rozzo’s 2007 Hyundai Tiburon GT (Best Customization) and Joseph Harris’s 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 (Best of Show and Best Interior). Show & Shine was sponsored by MadVette Motorsports. DR Kirkland got up to 120+ dB in Drive-by SPL Parade, 150+ in Sound Pressure, SPL Phat Truck, Phat I.C.E., and 71 points in Street Install.
